Health Promotion
is
Encouraging behaviours that lead to a healthy lifestyle
socially, mentally and physically
through activities directed toward increasing the
level of well being and actualizing the health potential
of individuals, families, communities and society.
The World Health Organization defines
Health as:
A state of complete physical, mental and social
well being, and not just the absence of infirmity.
(1974)
West Hill Community Services Programs
and Services work towards meeting both the immediate
needs of our clients, such as the need for food, shelter,
clothing, or medical care as well as their on-going
and future needs. We address on-going and future needs
by offering a number of Health
Promotion programs that assist clients
in developing skills for lifestyle change. All West
Hill Community Services programs and services network
with various providers to allow for integration between
sectors such as physical health, emotional health,
social health to meet the full spectrum of client
need.
Our many Groups and Community Initiatives

The Healthier
Babies program:
The Healthier Babies program
works with pre-natal and post-natal moms and their partners
or supports to provide ongoing information about pregnancy,
health and childcare. The program is held at 4100 Lawrence
Avenue East. A program is scheduled but flexibility is incorporated
to meet specific individual need. Pre-natal discussions cover
a wide range of topics including physical and emotional changes
during pregnancy. Psychological support strategies for individuals
and their supports are taught. Post-natal topics are structured
to inform and to allow clients to share their experiences
and offer peer support. Our program is culturally diverse
and sensitive to each individual. We provide written information
in a variety of languages to assist our clients and develop
a sense of "community" amongst our participants.
Childcare, nutritious snacks and one-on-one intervention and
counselling are available. As well access to the Food Bank
and TTC tickets can be arranged should the need arise. A Parent
Advisory Group meets to provide peer input and to review program
